US-FAA14 CFR 117.11

Flight time limitation

Read the official rule

This regulation sets maximum flight time limits for flightcrew members under Part 117. The actual limits depend on crew size: operations with minimum crew must follow Table A limits, three-pilot crews are limited to 13 hours of flight time, and four-pilot crews to 17 hours.

Neither the certificate holder can schedule nor the pilot can accept an assignment that would exceed these limits. However, if unexpected circumstances arise *after takeoff* that are beyond the operator's control (like weather diversions or mechanical issues), pilots may exceed these limits as necessary to safely land at the next suitable airport.

When flight time limits are exceeded under these emergency provisions, the certificate holder must report the incident to the FAA within 10 days, including details about what happened and why the extension was necessary. This ensures the FAA can track when and why limits are being exceeded while still allowing flexibility for genuine operational emergencies.
