US-FAA14 CFR 121.1005

Hazardous materials training required

Read the official rule

This regulation requires Part 121 air carriers to ensure that crewmembers and other personnel performing hazardous materials-related job functions complete FAA-approved hazmat training every 24 months. Without current training, these individuals cannot perform their duties.

Key provisions:

  • New hires may work up to 30 days under direct visual supervision before completing initial training
  • Recurrent training completed in the month before or after the due date counts as on-time; earlier completion resets the anniversary month
  • Multi-employer workers need only learn company-specific policies if they're already trained by another carrier with identical operations specifications
  • Foreign locations may use untrained local loaders if required by that country, but only under direct visual supervision of trained personnel

Certificate holders must also notify repair stations in writing about their hazmat policies and authorizations. This ensures everyone handling hazardous materials understands proper procedures and safety requirements.
