Servicing maintenance facilities
Read the official ruleThis regulation requires supplemental air carriers (charter and on-demand operations under Part 121) to demonstrate they have adequate maintenance capabilities available. Specifically, they must show they have:
- Competent personnel qualified to perform the work
- Adequate facilities and equipment for servicing and maintenance
- Sufficient spare parts, supplies, and materials
The key word is "available"—the carrier doesn't necessarily need to own these resources. They can contract with maintenance providers, but must prove these arrangements ensure proper aircraft maintenance and servicing.
This matters because supplemental operators often have smaller fleets and may operate to varied locations. The FAA wants assurance that wherever these aircraft fly, proper maintenance support exists to keep them airworthy. During certification and continuing oversight, operators must document how they'll maintain their aircraft, whether through in-house facilities, contracts with repair stations, or other arrangements that meet this standard.
