Training program: Approval of flight simulation training devices
Read the official ruleThis regulation establishes requirements for flight simulation training devices (FSTDs) used in Part 121 airline training programs. Each device must receive specific FAA approval for the certificate holder's program, the particular aircraft type and variant, and the specific maneuvers being trained. The simulator must meet Part 60 qualification standards and be modified whenever the actual aircraft changes in ways affecting performance or characteristics.
Operationally, each FSTD requires a daily functional check before use and a discrepancy log maintained by instructors or check pilots after each session. Multiple airlines can share approval for the same device.
For certain training, simulators aren't just permitted but required. Level B or higher full flight simulators (FFS) may replace actual aircraft for some inflight requirements if properly approved and integrated into the training program. Simulators must be used instead of aircraft for windshear training and extended envelope training, making these advanced devices essential for airline pilot qualification.
