US-FAA14 CFR 121.411

Qualifications: Check pilots and check flight engineers

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes who can serve as check pilots and check flight engineers for Part 121 air carriers. It defines two categories: those qualified to conduct checks in actual aircraft and those qualified only in flight simulation training devices (FSTDs).

To serve as a check pilot or check flight engineer, a person must hold the appropriate certificates and ratings, complete all required training and proficiency checks for that aircraft type, finish specialized check airman training per §121.413, and receive FAA approval.

Check pilots and engineers who work only in simulators must maintain currency by either flying at least two flight segments as a required crewmember in that aircraft type within the past 12 months, or completing an approved line-observation program. These currency requirements have a one-month grace period on either side of the due date.

All qualifications and training completions must be documented in the individual's training record maintained by the air carrier.
