US-FAA14 CFR 121.413

Initial, transition and recurrent training and checking requirements: Check pilots and check flight engineers

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes training and currency requirements for check pilots and check flight engineers at Part 121 airlines—the people who evaluate other pilots and flight engineers.

Before serving as a check airman, a person must complete initial or transition training specific to that role. They must also be observed conducting a check or supervising operating experience by an FAA inspector or company examiner at least once every 24 months. This observation can occur in the aircraft or a simulator.

The required training covers:

  • Check airman duties and evaluation techniques
  • How to detect inadequate training or safety-concerning personal characteristics
  • Proper operation of aircraft systems and procedures
  • For simulator instructors: specific training on simulator operation, limitations, and required equipment

Check pilots must practice conducting evaluations from both pilot seats. Those who use simulators need annual recurrent training on simulator-specific subjects.

The "calendar month" rule provides flexibility—requirements due in a given month can be completed the month before or after without losing currency.
