US-FAA14 CFR 121.443

Pilot in command qualification: Route and airports

Read the official rule

This regulation requires Part 121 air carriers to establish a system for providing pilots in command with current operational information about their routes and airports, and to verify pilots actually know and can use this information.

The airline must disseminate information covering:

  • Seasonal weather patterns
  • Navigation and communication facilities, including visual aids
  • Terrain, obstacles, and minimum safe altitudes
  • Standard procedures (arrivals, departures, holds, instrument approaches)
  • Airport layouts and congested areas
  • Current NOTAMs

The key requirement is that airlines must both *provide* this information and *ensure* pilots have adequate knowledge and ability to use it before operating as PIC on a given route. This goes beyond simply making materials available—the carrier must verify pilot competency with the specific operational information for their assigned routes and airports. The regulation also requires the airline's system to demonstrate compliance with the route qualification requirements in §121.445.
