Flight attendant duty period limitations and rest requirements: Domestic, flag, and supplemental operations
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets duty and rest limits for flight attendants working for Part 121 airlines (domestic, flag, and supplemental operations).
Basic rules: Flight attendants can be scheduled for up to 14 hours of duty, followed by at least 10 consecutive hours of rest. Longer duty periods are permitted with additional staffing:
- Up to 16 hours with one extra flight attendant beyond minimum
- Up to 18 hours with two extra flight attendants
- Up to 20 hours with three extra flight attendants (only for flights outside the lower 48 states)
Duty periods over 14 hours require 12 hours rest, though this can be reduced to 10 hours if followed by 14 hours rest within 24 hours. However, after a reduced rest period, the next duty period cannot exceed 14 hours.
Airlines cannot assign flight attendants to duty during required rest periods, and company-provided transportation to/from duty assignments doesn't count as rest time.
