Flight time limitations and rest requirements: All flight crewmembers
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets flight time limits and rest requirements for flight crewmembers working under Part 121 domestic operations.
Crewmembers cannot exceed 1,000 hours per year, 100 hours per month, 30 hours in any 7 consecutive days, or 8 hours between rest periods. Before completing any flight, crewmembers must have had a minimum rest period in the preceding 24 hours: 9 hours for flights under 8 hours, 10 hours for flights of 8-9 hours, or 11 hours for flights over 9 hours.
Airlines may reduce these rest periods to 8 or 9 hours minimum, but must provide compensatory rest of 10-12 hours starting within 24 hours of the reduced rest. Crewmembers must receive at least 24 consecutive hours off duty every 7 days.
Deadhead transportation time doesn't count as rest. If flights are scheduled within limits but exceed them due to circumstances beyond the airline's control (like weather), it's not a violation.
