US-FAA14 CFR 121.485

Flight time limitations: Three or more pilots and an additional flight crewmember

Read the official rule

This regulation sets flight time limits and rest requirements for flag operations (typically international flights) when the crew includes three or more pilots plus an additional flight crewmember.

The airline must schedule adequate ground rest periods for pilots away from base and provide sleeping quarters on the aircraft when a pilot is scheduled to fly more than 12 hours in any 24-hour period.

When pilots return to base, they must receive rest time equal to at least twice the hours they flew since their last base rest period. If this calculated rest exceeds seven days, the airline may schedule the excess portion at any time before the pilot's next flight assignment. During required rest periods, the airline cannot assign any duties.

Maximum flight time limits are:

  • 350 hours in any 90 consecutive days
  • 1,000 hours in any 12-calendar-month period

These rules ensure pilots on long international flights with augmented crews receive adequate rest to maintain safety.
