Flight time limitations: Pilots not regularly assigned

Read the official rule

This regulation sets flight time limits for pilots who don't have a regular monthly assignment under the standard scheduling rules. The basic limit is 100 hours in any 30 consecutive days for pilots without regular assignments.

However, the actual limits depend on the crew configurations you're scheduled to fly:

  • If you fly more than 20 hours monthly in two-pilot crews (or frequently switch between two-pilot and augmented crews), you follow the limits in §121.481
  • If you fly more than 20 hours monthly in augmented crews (two pilots plus additional crewmember), or frequently switch to three-pilot crews, you follow §121.483
  • If you fly 20 hours or less monthly in two-pilot crews, you follow the quarterly limits in §121.485
  • If you're assigned to mixed crew configurations that don't fit the above categories, you default to §121.483

This ensures non-regularly-assigned pilots have appropriate rest regardless of their varying monthly schedules.
