Flight crewmembers at controls

Read the official rule

Flight Crewmembers at Controls

Required flight crewmembers must remain at their assigned duty stations with seat belts fastened during takeoff, landing, and while en route. However, they may leave their stations for three reasons: performing necessary flight duties, physiological needs, or taking a rest period with proper relief.

When the pilot in command takes a rest break during cruise, the relief pilot must hold an unrestricted ATP certificate with appropriate type rating and be currently qualified as either PIC or SIC. Notably, an SIC acting as relief PIC doesn't need to meet all standard PIC requirements (like recent takeoffs/landings or line checks).

When the second in command rests, the relief pilot must be qualified to act as SIC for that aircraft during en route operations, though recent experience requirements don't apply.

This regulation ensures the flight deck is always properly staffed while allowing necessary crew rest on longer flights.
