Communication records: Domestic and flag operations

Read the official rule

Airlines operating domestic or flag flights must record all communications between the company and its pilots during flight operations. "En route" is defined broadly—from pushback at departure until reaching the arrival gate.

Each communication record must include:

  • Date and time
  • Flight number
  • Aircraft registration number
  • Approximate aircraft position
  • Call sign
  • A narrative description of the contact

These records must be kept for at least 30 days.

This regulation ensures airlines maintain a documented trail of operational communications with flight crews. These records can be valuable for investigating incidents, resolving disputes about instructions or information provided, and verifying compliance with operational procedures. The requirement applies specifically to Part 121 carriers conducting domestic operations (within the U.S.) and flag operations (international flights), complementing the communication system requirements found in §121.99.
