Training devices and simulators

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes requirements for training devices and simulators used in Advanced Qualification Programs (AQPs).

Any flight training device or simulator used for proficiency evaluations, proficiency training, recency of experience, or Line Operational Simulations must receive an FAA qualification level assignment. This ensures the device meets specific standards for these critical training purposes.

Other training equipment used in an AQP for different purposes still needs FAA approval, but through a simpler process. The airline must identify the equipment and explain how it will be used.

All approved training devices must be part of an ongoing maintenance program to keep them serviceable and functioning as intended. This matters because AQP training relies heavily on simulation, and the FAA wants assurance that devices accurately represent the aircraft and remain in proper working condition throughout their use in the program.
