Portable electronic devices

Read the official rule

This regulation prohibits passengers and crew from using portable electronic devices on Part 135 flights (charter and commuter operations) unless specifically allowed. The concern is potential interference with aircraft navigation and communication systems.

Several devices are automatically permitted:

  • Voice recorders
  • Hearing aids
  • Heart pacemakers
  • Electric shavers
  • FAA-compliant portable oxygen concentrators

Additionally, the certificate holder (the company operating under Part 135) may authorize other electronic devices if they determine those devices won't interfere with the aircraft's systems. This determination must be made by the specific operator flying that aircraft.

In practice, this means Part 135 operators can develop their own policies allowing devices like laptops, tablets, or phones, but passengers cannot simply use any device without the operator's approval. This differs from Part 121 airline operations, which have separate rules addressing personal electronic devices.
