Fire extinguishers: Passenger-carrying aircraft
Read the official ruleThis regulation requires Part 135 operators to equip passenger-carrying aircraft with approved hand fire extinguishers. The extinguishing agent must be appropriate for the types of fires expected to occur in an aircraft environment.
Every aircraft must have at least one fire extinguisher conveniently located on the flight deck for crew use. Additionally, if the aircraft has a passenger seating configuration of 10 to 30 seats (not counting pilot seats), at least one fire extinguisher must be conveniently located in the passenger cabin.
In practical terms, smaller aircraft with fewer than 10 passenger seats only need the flight deck extinguisher, while larger aircraft in this category need both cockpit and cabin extinguishers. Aircraft with 31 or more passenger seats fall under different requirements. The "conveniently located" requirement means extinguishers must be readily accessible during an emergency, not buried in a storage compartment.
