Duty period limitations and rest time requirements
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets duty and rest requirements for flight attendants working under Part 135 operations. The basic rule limits scheduled duty periods to 14 hours, followed by at least 9 consecutive hours of rest. However, operators can extend duty periods beyond 14 hours by adding extra flight attendants above the minimum required crew:
- 14-16 hours: requires one additional flight attendant
- 16-18 hours: requires two additional flight attendants
- 18-20 hours: requires three additional flight attendants (and must involve flights outside the lower 48 states)
Longer duty periods require 12 hours of rest afterward. Rest periods can be reduced (to 8 or 10 hours depending on duty length) if a longer compensatory rest period follows within 24 hours. Flight attendants must receive at least 24 consecutive hours off duty in every 7-day period. Importantly, company-provided transportation time between home and duty stations doesn't count as rest, and operators cannot assign any work during required rest periods.
