Initial and recurrent flight attendant crewmember testing requirements
Read the official ruleThis regulation requires Part 135 operators to test flight attendants on their knowledge and competence before they can work flights. The testing must occur within the preceding 12 calendar months and cover nine specific areas:
- The pilot in command's authority
- Handling passengers, including disruptive individuals
- Crew duties during ditching and evacuations, especially assisting passengers who need help
- Passenger briefing procedures
- Location and use of fire extinguishers and emergency equipment
- Proper use of cabin equipment and controls
- Passenger oxygen equipment operation
- All exits, evacuation slides, and escape ropes
- Seating procedures for passengers needing assistance during emergencies
The operator must verify through appropriate testing that each flight attendant understands these areas as they relate to their specific duties. This ensures flight attendants maintain current knowledge of safety procedures and can respond effectively in emergencies. Without passing this testing within the required timeframe, a person cannot legally serve as a flight attendant on Part 135 operations.
