US-FAA14 CFR 135.321

Applicability and terms used

Read the official rule

This regulation introduces the training program requirements for Part 135 air carriers and defines key training terms used throughout the subpart.

It applies to certificate holders who must establish and maintain FAA-approved training programs for their crewmembers, instructors, and operations personnel. It also covers carriers that contract with Part 142 training centers and addresses the approval and use of simulators and training devices.

The regulation defines eight types of training:

  • Initial: First-time training for a new aircraft or crew position
  • Transition: Moving to a different aircraft in the same crew position
  • Upgrade: Moving from second-in-command to pilot-in-command on the same aircraft type
  • Differences: Training on variations of an aircraft you're already qualified in
  • Recurrent: Periodic training to maintain proficiency
  • Requalification: Training to regain qualification after falling out of currency

These definitions establish the framework for understanding the specific training requirements that follow in subsequent regulations.
