Approval of aircraft simulators and other training devices
Read the official ruleThis regulation governs when Part 135 operators can use simulators and training devices instead of actual aircraft for training and checking pilots.
To use a simulator or training device, the operator must get FAA approval to include it in their training program. Each device needs specific approval for that particular operator and for the specific maneuvers or procedures it will be used to teach. The device must maintain its approved performance characteristics over time.
For full aircraft simulators specifically, they must be approved for the exact aircraft type (and variant) being simulated, and must be updated whenever the actual aircraft is modified in ways that affect performance or handling characteristics.
Multiple Part 135 operators can share the same approved simulator or training device—they don't each need their own exclusive equipment.
The FAA evaluates these devices when reviewing the operator's overall training curriculum, considering whether the proposed methods and equipment are adequate for safe pilot training.
