US-FAA14 CFR 135.505

Hazardous materials training required

Read the official rule

This regulation requires Part 135 operators to ensure that crewmembers and other personnel handling hazardous materials complete FAA-approved hazmat training every 24 months. This applies to anyone performing job functions specified in §135.501(a), such as accepting, handling, or loading hazmat.

Key provisions:

  • New hires can work up to 30 days without training if under direct visual supervision of a trained person
  • Recurrent training completed within the month before or after the due date counts as on-time
  • Employees working for multiple certificate holders may only need training in company-specific policies if they've already completed approved training elsewhere with similar operations
  • Certificate holders must notify repair stations of their hazmat policies in writing
  • At foreign locations where local law requires using local loaders, untrained personnel may load aircraft under direct supervision of trained personnel

This ensures everyone handling hazardous materials understands safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
