Flight Data Monitoring System

Read the official rule

If you operate a helicopter for air ambulance services, you must have an approved flight data monitoring system installed that records flight performance data. This requirement has been in effect since April 23, 2018.

The system must meet two operational requirements:

  • Power source: It must receive electrical power from the aircraft's most reliable electrical bus—one that won't fail easily but also won't compromise power to critical or emergency systems
  • Operating time: It must run continuously from the moment you apply electrical power before takeoff until you remove power after landing

This regulation ensures that air ambulance helicopters capture flight data throughout every operation, which helps operators identify safety trends, monitor pilot performance, and investigate incidents. The system essentially creates a record of how the helicopter was flown, providing valuable safety oversight for these critical medical transport missions.
