US-FAA14 CFR 135.611

IFR operations at locations without weather reporting

Read the official rule

This regulation allows Part 135 helicopter air ambulance operators to conduct IFR operations at airports that have instrument approaches but lack official weather reporting, if specifically authorized by the FAA.

Key requirements:

  • Weather must be obtained from an approved source within 15 nautical miles, or from area observations/forecasts if closer reports aren't available
  • An alternate airport meeting standard requirements must be planned
  • IFR departures in Class G airspace with visual transitions require the pilot to verify weather meets published minimums or VFR requirements
  • All approaches must use Category A speeds or those required for the approach type
  • The helicopter must have severe weather detection equipment unless the pilot reasonably determines severe weather won't be encountered

After landing at these locations, pilots may determine if weather meets takeoff requirements for departure. This regulation enables air ambulance access to remote facilities while maintaining safety standards through weather information requirements and equipment mandates.
