The Pilots Desk
US-FAA14 CFR 135.81

Informing personnel of operational information and appropriate changes

Read the official rule

This regulation requires Part 135 operators (charter and commuter airlines) to keep their employees informed about company operations specifications that affect their jobs. More specifically, operators must provide pilots with current copies of essential reference materials:

  • The Airman's Information Manual (or appropriate regional supplement, or commercial equivalent)
  • FAR Parts 91 and 135
  • Aircraft equipment manuals and flight manuals
  • For international flights, the International Flight Information Manual (or commercial equivalent) covering operational and entry requirements for destination countries

The practical purpose is ensuring pilots have access to the regulatory and operational information they need to fly safely and legally. These materials contain critical data about procedures, airspace, airports, aircraft systems, and international requirements. The operator can't simply assume pilots will find this information on their own—they must actively make it available. This keeps everyone working from the same current information and helps maintain standardized operations across the company.
