Pilot school ratings

Read the official rule

This regulation lists the different course ratings that a pilot school can be authorized to offer. When applying for either a full pilot school certificate or a provisional certificate, the school specifies which courses it wants approval to conduct.

The available ratings fall into four categories:

  • Certification and rating courses for recreational through ATP certificates, flight and ground instructor certificates, and additional aircraft ratings
  • Special preparation courses including refresher training, agricultural operations, external loads, and specialized programs like ATP certification training
  • Pilot ground school courses for knowledge-only instruction
  • Combined private pilot and instrument rating courses

Each course type has specific curriculum requirements detailed in the regulation's appendices (A through M). A school doesn't automatically get approval for all courses—it must apply for and meet the standards for each rating it wants to offer. This ensures schools have appropriate facilities, aircraft, instructors, and curricula for their authorized training programs.
