Check instructor qualifications

Read the official rule

This regulation sets the qualifications for check instructors at Part 141 flight schools—the people who conduct stage checks, end-of-course tests, and instructor proficiency checks.

All check instructors must pass a test from the chief instructor covering teaching methods, the AIM, relevant FARs (Parts 61, 91, 141), and the specific course standards.

For flight check instructors, additional requirements include holding a commercial or ATP certificate with appropriate ratings, maintaining currency under §61.57, holding a current flight instructor certificate (except for lighter-than-air), and passing a proficiency test on the course maneuvers.

For ground check instructors, they need either a flight instructor certificate or ground instructor certificate with appropriate ratings (or for lighter-than-air, a commercial pilot certificate with that rating).

The chief instructor must designate check instructors in writing, and the FAA must approve them. Importantly, check instructors cannot test students they personally trained or recommended for that test—ensuring independent evaluation.
