Aeronautical knowledge

Read the official rule

This regulation lists the ground school topics you must study before earning a private pilot certificate. You can meet this requirement either through formal instruction with a CFI or by completing a home-study course.

The required knowledge areas cover everything from basic regulations and weather to aircraft performance and emergency procedures. Key topics include:

  • FARs governing private pilot operations
  • How to use charts, weather products, and the Aeronautical Information Manual
  • Aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and performance calculations like weight and balance
  • Safety topics including collision avoidance, wake turbulence, and density altitude effects
  • Flight planning, including how to find runway data, calculate fuel needs, and prepare backup plans

For airplane and glider ratings specifically, you must also study stall and spin awareness. Your instructor will ensure you've covered all applicable areas before endorsing you for the knowledge test, which evaluates your understanding of these topics.
