Balloon rating: Limitations
Read the official ruleWhen you take your private pilot practical test with a balloon rating, the type of balloon you use determines what you can fly afterward. If you test in a hot air balloon (one with an airborne heater), your certificate will be limited to hot air balloons only. If you test in a gas balloon, you'll be limited to gas balloons only.
These limitations exist because hot air and gas balloons operate quite differently and require distinct skills. However, the limitation isn't permanent. To remove it, you must:
- Gain the required aeronautical experience in the other type of balloon
- Receive a logbook endorsement from an instructor confirming you've completed that experience and can safely operate that balloon type
This allows you to add the other balloon type to your privileges without taking another full practical test.
