The Pilots Desk
US-FAA14 CFR 61.121

Applicability

Read the official rule

This regulation introduces the commercial pilot certificate section of Part 61. It tells you that the following regulations (§61.123 through §61.133) will cover three main areas:

What this subpart contains:

  • Requirements you must meet to earn a commercial pilot certificate and its associated ratings
  • When you're legally required to hold a commercial certificate (essentially, when you're flying for compensation or hire)
  • Operating rules that apply specifically to commercial pilots

Think of this as the table of contents for becoming a commercial pilot. While a private pilot certificate lets you fly but not for pay, the commercial certificate is your gateway to making money as a pilot—whether that's flight instructing, banner towing, aerial photography, or working toward an airline career. This section lays out everything from the flight hours you'll need to the privileges and limitations you'll have once certificated.
