Aeronautical knowledge

Read the official rule

To earn a commercial pilot certificate, you must receive ground training from an authorized instructor or complete a home-study course covering specific aeronautical knowledge areas relevant to your aircraft category and class rating.

The required knowledge areas include: applicable FARs for commercial operations, NTSB accident reporting, aerodynamics, meteorology (including weather hazards and avoidance), aircraft operations, weight and balance, performance charts and limitations, navigation using charts and compass, air navigation facilities, aeronautical decision-making, aircraft systems, appropriate maneuvers and emergency procedures, night and high-altitude operations, and National Airspace System procedures.

This regulation establishes the foundational knowledge you need before taking the commercial pilot knowledge test. Your instructor must document this training in your logbook, or you must complete an approved home-study course. These topics prepare you for the increased responsibilities and operational complexity of flying for compensation or hire.
