US-FAA14 CFR 61.165

Additional aircraft category and class ratings

Read the official rule

This regulation sets out the requirements for adding a new aircraft category or class rating to an existing airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate. If you already hold an ATP certificate in one category (like airplane) and want to add another (like helicopter), you must meet specific eligibility, knowledge, experience, and practical test requirements for that new category.

The requirements vary by what you're adding:

  • Different category (airplane to helicopter, etc.): Complete knowledge test, meet experience requirements, and pass a practical test specific to that category
  • Multiengine airplane rating: Must also complete the ATP certification training program (CTP)
  • Additional class within same category: Simplified requirements—generally just the practical test and applicable experience, without repeating the full knowledge test

This allows experienced ATP pilots to expand their qualifications without completely starting over, while still ensuring they demonstrate competency in the new aircraft type.
