US-FAA14 CFR 61.3

Requirement for certificates, ratings, privileges, and authorizations

Read the official rule

In plain English

To act as pilot in command (or a required pilot crewmember) you must carry a valid pilot certificate, a photo ID, and, when required, a medical certificate. The documents must be presented to the FAA, NTSB or law enforcement on request.

Key points

  • Carry your pilot certificate and a government photo ID.
  • Carry a current medical (or BasicMed qualification) when required.
  • Present them on request.

Common pitfalls

  • Leaving the plastic certificate at home.
  • Flying on a lapsed medical.
