US-FAA14 CFR 61.309

What aeronautical knowledge must I have to apply for a sport pilot certificate?

Read the official rule

To qualify for a sport pilot certificate, you must receive ground training from an instructor or complete a home-study course covering specific knowledge areas. These include the regulations governing sport pilot operations, accident reporting procedures, and how to use aeronautical publications like charts and the AIM.

You'll need to understand weather recognition and avoidance, safe aircraft operation including collision and wake turbulence avoidance, and how density altitude affects performance. The regulation also requires knowledge of weight and balance calculations, basic aerodynamics and aircraft systems, stall and spin awareness, and aeronautical decision-making.

Finally, you must learn preflight planning, including how to obtain airport and weather information, calculate fuel needs, and plan alternatives if your flight can't be completed as intended. This knowledge foundation ensures sport pilots understand the essential concepts needed to fly safely within their operating privileges.
