US-FAA14 CFR 61.31
Type rating requirements, additional training, and authorization requirements
Read the official ruleIn plain English
Certain aircraft require specific training and a one-time logbook endorsement before you can act as PIC. The classic ones are high-performance (more than 200 horsepower), complex (retractable gear, flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller), high-altitude (pressurized aircraft capable of above 25,000 ft), and tailwheel aircraft.
Key points
- High-performance: >200 hp — ground and flight training + endorsement.
- Complex: retractable gear + flaps + constant-speed prop.
- High-altitude (pressurized, service ceiling/max op above 25,000 ft).
- Tailwheel: separate endorsement.
- Type ratings are required for large (>12,500 lb) and turbojet aircraft.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming one endorsement covers another — they're separate.
