Relief for U.S. Military and civilian personnel who are assigned outside the United States in support of U.S. Armed Forces operations

Read the official rule

This regulation provides relief for military members and civilian personnel deployed overseas in support of U.S. Armed Forces operations since September 11, 2001. If your flight instructor certificate, written test report, or inspection authorization expired while you were deployed (or within 6 months after returning), you can still use these expired documents to demonstrate eligibility for renewal or to take practical tests.

To qualify, you must have served outside the U.S. in support of Armed Forces operations, and you must complete the renewal requirements or practical test within 6 months of returning home. Special provisions apply to flight instructor certificates issued after December 1, 2024, regarding recent experience requirements.

You'll need to submit an application to your local Flight Standards office along with documentation proving your deployment dates—such as military orders, official government personnel action notices, or a letter from your commander or supervisor. This ensures deployed personnel aren't penalized for lapses that occurred during their service.
