US-FAA14 CFR 61.405

What tests do I have to take to obtain a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating?

Read the official rule

To earn a sport pilot flight instructor certificate, you must pass two tests. First, you need a knowledge test covering fundamentals of instructing (unless you qualify for an exemption under §61.407(c)) and the aeronautical knowledge areas for the sport pilot category and class you'll teach. Before taking it, an instructor must endorse that you're prepared.

Second, you must pass a practical test demonstrating your ability to teach in your chosen aircraft category and class. Before the practical test, you need endorsements confirming you're ready and, if seeking airplane or glider privileges, that you're competent to teach spin-related procedures. During the test, you'll demonstrate teaching ability in an appropriate aircraft. For airplane or glider ratings, you must show you can teach stall awareness and spins, though the examiner may accept your spin endorsement instead—unless you previously failed on these specific items.
