The Pilots Desk
US-FAA14 CFR 61.412

Do I need additional training to provide instruction on control and maneuvering an airplane solely by reference to the instruments in an aircraft based on VH?

Read the official rule

This regulation applies to flight instructors with a sport pilot rating who want to teach basic instrument flying skills to student pilots preparing for solo cross-country flights in faster light-sport aircraft (those with VH greater than 87 knots).

To provide this training, the instructor must:

  • Already hold the endorsement required by § 61.327(b) for teaching in higher-performance light-sport aircraft
  • Complete at least 1 hour of ground training and 3 hours of flight training in aircraft (or simulators) with VH greater than 87 knots, focusing on instrument reference flying
  • Receive a one-time logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying proficiency in teaching instrument skills, including straight-and-level flight, turns, climbs, descents, radio navigation, and ATC communications

This ensures sport pilot instructors are properly qualified before teaching the instrument skills that student sport pilots need for their solo cross-country endorsement in faster aircraft.
