How do I obtain privileges to provide training in an additional category or class of aircraft?

Read the official rule

If you're already a flight instructor under Part 61 Subpart H or hold a sport pilot flight instructor rating, and you want to add privileges to teach in another category or class of light-sport aircraft, you must complete four steps:

First, receive training and a logbook endorsement from an instructor confirming you meet the knowledge and proficiency requirements for that category/class. Second, pass a proficiency check with a *different* instructor covering the relevant teaching areas. Third, submit an application to the instructor who gave you the proficiency check. Fourth, receive a logbook endorsement from that same instructor authorizing the new privilege.

There's one exception: if you're adding airplane single-engine (land or sea) or helicopter with simplified controls, you must take a full practical test instead of just a proficiency check. This process lets instructors expand their teaching authority to additional aircraft types without repeating the entire instructor certification process.
