US-FAA14 CFR 61.429

May I exercise the privileges of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating if I hold a flight instructor certificate with another rating?

Read the official rule

If you already hold a flight instructor certificate (with any rating), or a commercial pilot certificate with an airship or balloon rating, you can exercise sport pilot flight instructor privileges without additional testing. However, several limitations apply:

You can only instruct in aircraft categories and classes already listed on your existing certificate. You must follow the general sport pilot instructor limitations in §61.415 and maintain required records per §61.423.

If you want to instruct in a category or class not on your certificate, you must meet the additional training requirements in §61.419. Similarly, if you want to teach in aircraft with simplified flight controls (a model-specific designation), you need the training and endorsement required by §61.31(l) before providing instruction in that aircraft.

This regulation essentially allows traditional CFIs to teach sport pilot students without redundant certification, while ensuring they stay within their rated categories and meet any special aircraft requirements.
