Second-in-command qualifications
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets the requirements to legally serve as second-in-command (SIC) in aircraft certificated for more than one pilot or operations requiring an SIC.
Basic qualifications: You need at least a private pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings, an instrument rating if flying IFR, and normally a type rating for the aircraft (though domestic operations within U.S. airspace don't require the type rating).
Currency requirements: Within the previous 12 months, you must become familiar with the aircraft's systems, procedures, performance, and flight manual. You must also log time in the aircraft or simulator including three takeoffs and landings as sole manipulator, engine-out procedures, and crew resource management training.
SIC type rating: You can obtain an "SIC Privileges Only" type rating by completing this training and submitting the proper paperwork to the FAA—no practical test required. This rating demonstrates you've met the second-in-command qualification requirements for that specific aircraft type.
