Eligibility requirements for student pilots

Read the official rule

This regulation sets the basic eligibility requirements to obtain a student pilot certificate, which you need before you can begin solo flight training.

Age requirements differ by aircraft type:

  • You must be at least 16 years old to train in airplanes, helicopters, gyroplanes, or airships
  • You can start at 14 years old if you're training in gliders or balloons only

English language proficiency is required because aviation communication and materials are in English. You must be able to read, speak, write, and understand the language. If a medical condition prevents you from meeting one of these language requirements, the FAA may issue your certificate with special operating limitations to ensure safety.

These are minimum requirements—meeting them doesn't guarantee certificate issuance, but failing to meet them means you're not eligible to apply. Your flight instructor will help you through the application process once you meet these basic criteria.
