Student pilot seeking a sport pilot certificate or a recreational pilot certificate: Operations at airports within, and in airspace located within, Class B, C, and D airspace, or at airports with an operational control tower in other airspace
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets training requirements for student pilots pursuing sport or recreational pilot certificates who want to fly solo in controlled airspace or at towered airports.
Before flying solo in Class B, C, or D airspace or at any airport with an operating control tower, you must receive ground and flight training covering:
- Radio communications, navigation systems, and radar services
- Three takeoffs and full-stop landings at a towered airport
- Applicable Part 91 flight rules and ATC clearance procedures
- Specific training for the particular airspace or airport where you'll fly solo (must be within 90 days before the flight)
The training for specific airspace must be conducted *in* that airspace, and training for specific airports must be conducted *at* that airport. Your instructor must provide a logbook endorsement certifying you're proficient for solo operations in that specific location before you can fly there alone.
