Medical records

Read the official rule

The FAA can request additional medical information or records if needed to determine whether you meet medical standards for your certificate. When this happens, you must either provide the information directly or authorize your healthcare providers to release it to the FAA.

If you refuse or fail to comply with such a request, the FAA may suspend, modify, or revoke your existing medical certificate, or deny your application if you're applying for one. Any suspension or modification remains in effect until you provide the requested information and the FAA determines you meet the medical standards.

In practice, this regulation gives the FAA authority to investigate medical issues that arise during the certification process or afterward. It means you cannot simply refuse to provide medical records when the FAA has reason to question your medical qualification—doing so will result in loss of your medical certificate until you cooperate and are found to meet the standards.
