US-FAA14 CFR 71.901

Applicability

Read the official rule

This regulation explains how to interpret the official list of reporting points published in FAA Order 7400.11K.

By default, every reporting point listed applies to aircraft flying in any direction—you use the same reporting points whether flying north, south, east, or west. However, if a reporting point only applies to specific airways or certain directions of flight, the official description will explicitly say so.

The regulation also clarifies that when you see a place name in a reporting point description, it refers to the VOR or VORTAC navigation facility with that name, not just any geographic location.

This matters because reporting points are locations where ATC may require you to report your position, especially when flying IFR. Understanding which reporting points apply to your route and direction of travel helps you comply with position reporting requirements and maintain proper communication with air traffic control.
