US-FAA14 CFR 73.81

Applicability

Read the official rule

This regulation introduces the section of the FARs that deals with prohibited areas—specific zones where aircraft flight is not allowed. It tells you that the following regulations in this subpart will identify where these prohibited areas are located and what restrictions apply when operating near them.

Prohibited areas exist for security or safety reasons, such as around sensitive government facilities or areas where hazardous activities occur. Unlike restricted areas where you might get permission to enter, prohibited areas are off-limits to all aircraft operations without exception (unless you have specific authorization from the using or controlling agency).

As a pilot, this matters because you must identify any prohibited areas along your route during flight planning and ensure you stay clear of them. Violating a prohibited area can result in serious consequences, including interception by military aircraft and certificate action. Check current aeronautical charts and NOTAMs to identify these areas before every flight.
