Testing and training: Applicability and terms used

Read the official rule

This regulation introduces the training and testing requirements for fractional ownership programs (Part 91 Subpart K). It outlines what the following sections (§§91.1065-91.1107) will cover: required tests and checks for pilots and flight attendants, training program requirements, and simulator/training device qualifications.

Program managers have flexibility in how they comply. With FAA authorization, they can follow either Part 121 (airline) or Part 135 (charter) training rules instead, with some modifications—notably, they're exempt from certain operating experience requirements and, for single-pilot operations, from leadership and command training.

The regulation also defines key training terms that apply throughout the subpart:

  • Initial training: First-time qualification in a crew position
  • Transition training: Moving to a different aircraft in the same role
  • Upgrade training: Moving from second-in-command to pilot-in-command
  • Differences training: Learning variations of an already-qualified aircraft type
  • Recurrent training: Ongoing proficiency training
  • Requalification training: Regaining currency after falling behind requirements
