US-FAA14 CFR 91.1087

Approval of aircraft simulators and other training devices

Read the official rule

This regulation governs when program managers operating under Subpart K can use simulators and training devices instead of actual aircraft for training and checking pilots.

To use a simulator or training device, the program manager must get FAA approval. Each device needs specific approval for that particular program manager and for the specific maneuvers or procedures it will be used to teach or test. The device must maintain its approved performance characteristics over time.

For aircraft simulators specifically, they must be approved for the exact aircraft type (and variant) being simulated. If the actual aircraft gets modified in ways that change its performance or characteristics, the simulator must be updated to match.

Multiple program managers can share the same approved simulator or device. When the FAA reviews training programs, they evaluate whether the proposed simulators and training devices are appropriate for the curriculum.
