Pilots: Initial, transition, upgrade, requalification, and differences flight training
Read the official ruleThis regulation applies to pilots operating under an approved training program (typically fractional ownership or on-demand operations under Subpart K). It requires that pilots complete hands-on flight training for all maneuvers and procedures in their approved curriculum during initial training, transitions to new aircraft, upgrades, requalification, or differences training.
While these maneuvers must generally be performed in actual flight, the regulation permits using approved simulators or training devices for maneuvers that can be adequately practiced in them. When a program includes simulator training, pilots must:
- Complete training and practice in the simulator for all applicable maneuvers
- Pass a proficiency check (either in the aircraft or simulator) demonstrating pilot-in-command or second-in-command competency, as appropriate
This ensures pilots gain practical experience with required procedures while allowing cost-effective and safe use of simulation technology where appropriate. The program manager's approved training program specifies which maneuvers can be accomplished in simulators versus actual aircraft.
