Operations in Class C airspace

Read the official rule

In plain English

To operate in Class C airspace you must establish two-way radio communication with ATC before entering and maintain it, and have an operating Mode C transponder and ADS-B Out. There is no separate "clearance" required — communication is the key.

Key points

  • Two-way comm established before entry; Mode C + ADS-B Out required.
  • ATC provides separation between IFR and participating VFR traffic.
  • The outer area extends ~20 NM with services available.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming you need an explicit "cleared to enter" — establishing comms is what’s required.
