US-FAA14 CFR 91.131
Operations in Class B airspace
Read the official ruleIn plain English
To operate in Class B airspace you must receive an ATC clearance ("cleared into the Bravo") before entering, and the aircraft needs a Mode C transponder and ADS-B Out. A private (or higher) certificate is required to land at the busiest Class B primary airports; student pilots need specific training/endorsements and some airports are off-limits to them.
Key points
- Explicit clearance to enter required — comms alone is not enough.
- Mode C transponder + ADS-B Out required in and above Class B.
- Student/recreational pilots have endorsement requirements and some airport restrictions.
Common pitfalls
- Entering on "radar contact" without the words "cleared into Class Bravo".
